Daily Express - front page news: 31st August 2010
Today Climate Rush begins its campaign to give every journalist in the UK access to basic climate science. Their desire to give journalists fact-cards about climate change science is inspired by the increase in articles that suggest there is still significant doubt over whether the climate is changing much faster and more dangerously because of humans burning fossil fuels.
‘We’re worried that the newspapers are leading people into a false sense of security, that they’re creating doubt around a subject when what we need most is action” says Sophie, a 21 year old member of Climate Rush. ”It’s so irresponsible because of course people believe what they read in the papers. So if they are told that there is still doubt over climate science then they won’t demand that the government, business, in fact all of society does more to limit our CO2 emissions. And a future destroyed by climate change is something that really scares me.”
Today Climate Rush will visit The Daily Mail (most recent article about climate change), The Telegraph (most recent article about climate change) and The Express (most recent front page about climate change). But this is only the beginning of the campaign. These papers are perhaps the worst offenders of peddling confusion around the climate change debate but Climate Rush pledges to give all journalists who desire to be well-informed, up to date and modern a course in climate science. We also aim to give these courses to journalists who are ignorant of modern science, out of date and prefer to lead the public up the garden path (fairly irresponsibly).
Climate Rush - The Rendezvous will meet Wednesday 13th October at 7pm to work out more wonderful ways to fight confusion about climate change. Caroline Lucas MP, Diane Atkinson, Aldermaston Women and Climate Rush will speak before 40 minutes of workshops and plotting. All welcome.
